First off, the place where I live. Stuyvesant Town. In the news last year when owner MetLife sold it, along with the adjacent Peter Cooper Village, to Tishman Speyer and BlackRock for $5.4 billion. According to Wikipedia, "the biggest deal for a single American property in modern times." Rumors persist that in order to make the holding profitable the current owners will have to eventually tear down the 110 12-floor buildings and build high-rises. These days, the typical fate of many older buildings in Manhattan.
Outside, the complex looks like dismal projects from the 1950s. But inside, with its greenery, flowers, park areas, playgrounds and oval fountain, Stuy Town is an oasis, a haven from the noise, pollution and congestion of the city. Here you can dream and plan and regenerate.
